Know the Categories of Mist Collectors

Not all mist collectors are created equal. Each factory setting has its own nuances. The Summit team’s analysis of your facility will ensure the correct equipment is specified for your needs.

Impingers/Prefiltration offer basic filtration or pre-dropout for chips, larger particulate, and droplets. These are generally washable filters that require minimal maintenance.

Media Filtration is a proven cost-effective filter that’s been proven to work very well for mist and particulates larger than 1 micron (mechanically produced) in the correct application. They can handle single shift or 24/7 operations at 1000 CFM to 50000 CFM, and their filter life is generally 6 months to 1 year.

ESP (Electrostatic Precipitators) is an older, yet proven technology. ESPs applied properly are excellent for submicron particulate. They can also offer the lowest operating cost of any mist collection system. ESPs are ideal solutions with oil-based coolants and lubricants, as oil collects and runs off the plates. The cells are washable and will last for years if properly maintained. These can be single pass up to triple pass, and range from 500 CFM to 50,000 CFM.

Essential Mist Collection System Factors to be Considered

A mist collection system will only be as effective as the planning behind it. When it comes to compliance and safety, you must ask all of the pertinent questions and consider all of the little factors that make your facility unique.

Your system should create a safe and healthy environment, while still operating as efficiently as possible.

  • What type of mist are you trying to collect?
  • What maintenance capabilities do you have?
  • How clean do you need the airflow to be when it comes out?
  • What is your investment threshold for a mist collection system?

These questions are great starters. The process of designing the correct system for your facility is complex and not to be taken lightly. Never entrust your indoor air quality to anyone but leading industry experts. The Summit experts.

Oil Mist and Smoke Collection Pose Unique Challenges

Mist Collectors Protect Your Employees and Equipment

Effective and low maintenance mist collection systems begin with an understanding of how the mist or smoke is created.

Oil mist is a byproduct of metal machining, forming when metalworking fluids (or MWFs) are used to cool or lubricate machines during the process. Sometimes oil will come in contact with the machined surface of the metal  causing the oil to vaporize and then condense as oil smoke.

Both oil mist and oil smoke present a variety of workplace hazards that can only be alleviated with mist collectors.

Oil mist and oil smoke particles range in size from a micron or less up to 100 microns, so it is essential to understand the best way to collect. Mechanical generation, thermal generation, and high-pressure applications all create oil mist and smoke a little differently. The result means, the best way to collect these byproducts is a little different for each process.

Once we understand the makeup of the mist or smoke, we can then select the correct mist collection solution to handle the job. Summit can provide the ideal mechanical mist separation, Cyclones, media filtration, deep bed filtration, and electrostatic precipitators for your specific needs.

Oil Mist and Oil Smoke Present Health, Safety and Equipment Damage Hazards

Oil mist and oil smoke affect the air and surfaces throughout a workspace where they are present. In order to prevent serious consequences, a mist collector is essential.

Respiratory illness among workers is a potential result of having oil mist and smoke lingering in the air. Good mist collection and ventilation must be in place to avoid serious illness.

Slip and fall hazards are quite common in spaces with oil mist and smoke as the oil does ultimately settle on surfaces within the facility.

Equipment damage is a common result of oil mist and smoke settling on surfaces. When the oily residue seeps into electronic components, damage can occur.
